  10.  AB    OBJECTIVE: To assess the rate of seroconversion from HIV-negative
  11.        (HIV-N) to HIV-1 or HIV-2 seropositivity and from HIV-1 or HIV-2
  12.        seropositivity to dual reactivity (HIV-D) in a cohort of women enrolled
  13.        in a study of perinatal HIV transmission in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire.
  14.        METHODS: From September 1990 to August 1992, HIV-1, HIV-2, and HIV-N
  15.        women were enrolled at delivery and followed until January 1994.
  16.        Six-monthly blood samples were screened for HIV antibodies by EIA and
  17.        confirmed by a synthetic peptide-based test (Peptilav) or Western blot.
  18.        HIV serotype (HIV-1, HIV-2, or HIV-D) was determined by Peptilav, and
  19.        seroconversion (SC) was defined as a change in Peptilav result.

  21.        CONCLUSIONS: SC to dual reactivity occurs at similar rates in HIV-1 and
  22.        HIV-2 women, occurs at higher rates than does SC from HIV-N to HIV-1 or
  23.        HIV-2 seropositivity, and tends to be associated with more advanced
  24.        immunosuppression. These data suggest that immunosuppressed HIV
  25.        seropositive women may be more susceptible to HIV-1 or HIV-2 infection
  26.        than are seronegative women and/or that dual reactivity may be a marker
  27.        for immunosuppression. Virologic testing will help to investigate these
  28.        two possibilities.
